About Brian Fell

‘A master craftsperson, a leader in his field, possessing great skill and talent, he has spent over three decades studying and understanding the nature of metal, his sculptural sensibilities have helped refine ways of manipulating this stubborn material into an impressive body of sculpture.’

A maker first and foremost, Brian Fell moves easily between abstraction and figuration. He believes that the two disciplines feed one another and that each brings distinct but related intellectual artistic challenges. In making public art, Brian enjoys responding to the stories of places, the practical issues on every site and the opportunities that each interior and exterior location brings.

Over the years he has developed a high level of technical ability and practical skill borne out of a familiarity with and a love for his material of choice – steel. Fell creates his sculpture through the unusual technique of cold forging. The steel is shaped by being beaten with hammers or bent using levers and vices. This physical making process is an important part of his artistic practice.

Throughout his artistic career, he has generously shared his extensive knowledge and skills with many artists and curators. His longstanding relationship with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where he currently has a studio, has brought him into contact with many emerging and established exhibiting sculptors. He regularly undertakes specialist fabrication work for the Park and other artists.
