These sculptures by Brian Fell and George Fell were commissioned as part of a public art scheme led by Gordon Young for Shanly Homes Ltd. They were created to represent the local history of Maidenhead, Berkshire and are permanently installed in the centre of the town.
This sculpture depicting a Toucan was made in mild steel then painted. It marks the site of the “El Toucan Café” which was owned by Diana Dors, an iconic British actress and singer who was a resident of the town.
The sculpture depicting a Berkshire Pig is made from mild steel that has been galvanized then powder coated. It was made to mark the heritage of award winning pigs that have been bred in Maidenhead. These distinctive black, longhaired pigs are known to produce the highest quality pork and are sought after around the world.
The sculpture of a leaping stag was made in mild steel, galvanized then painted. Hunting packs overseen by a royal appointee have met in Maidenhead since 1536. This sculpture depicts a particular stag known as Ceterwayd, a royal stag that the hunters were not allowed to kill. The challenge for the hunters was to try to touch but not injure this stag over the course of the day.
